AI Tools Drive Spike In Enterprise Data Loss, Report Warns

The Zscaler ThreatLabz 2025 Data Risk Report highlights the growing vulnerabilities for enterprises, as reliance on digital technologies continues to expand.

The report indicates a major trend: AI applications, such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, played a key role in millions of incidents where sensitive data, including social security numbers, was exposed or lost.

The findings also reveal that enterprises faced more than 872 million data loss violations across more than 3,000 different SaaS (Software as a Service) apps. Email remained a top source of leakage, with nearly 104 million transactions leading to billions of sensitive data exposures. File-sharing platforms showed a sharp rise as well, with 212 million transactions involving data loss incidents, according to the report.

“The 2025 Data Risk Report sheds light on the multifaceted data security risks enterprises face in today’s digitally enabled world,” the report states. Organizations are urged to consider a unified, AI-driven strategy for data security as the use of generative AI tools and cloud services continues to expand.
